17 Years of Tail Wags & Belly Rubs: Celebrating the Joyful Life of Smokey the Super Shih Tzu

Every superhero needs a sidekick, and for me, that was Smokey, my bold little Shih Tzu with the heart of a lion. For 17 years, Smokey wasn’t just a pet. He was my partner in crime, a confidant with fur, and a tiny whirlwind of joy and curiosity.

In his prime, Smokey could scout a park faster than a drone and sniff out a snack like a seasoned detective. He’d strut on our neighborhood walks like he owned the sidewalks, cape or no cape. Whether I was deep in blog drafts or brainstorming my next big idea, Smokey was always nearby, offering his silent wisdom and the occasional 'arf' of editorial advice.

We dubbed ourselves “Superhero Janette and Smokey 'Smoke Dog' Owens.” It wasn’t far from the truth. While I fought battles with words, Smokey tackled couches, stuffed toys, and the occasional unsuspecting sock. His adventurous spirit may have diminished over time, but his appetite never did.

Recently, I made the tough but humane decision to let my brave boy rest. He had given his all, more love, laughter, and companionship than I could ever repay.

But superheroes don’t disappear. They inspire. And Smokey’s legacy lives on in every adventure I take, every story I write, and every quiet moment when I still feel him curled beside me.

Fly high, Smoke Dog! The cape still fits. I love you, Little Guy! 🐾💚
